Cathay Holidays Marketing Officer Yuri Tang enjoys travelling around the world with friends, and loves to discover local culture and delicious cuisine more than just shopping. This time, she would like to share some great place in Hokkaido.
Having often heard that you’ll become a Hokkaido fan once you visit Hokkaido, I found that it’s true! During my 7-days/6-nights trip, I had plenty of time to visit and explore the southern part of Hokkaido. Noboribetsu, which is famous for its onsen, was my first priority, but I visited the popular Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe before staying at an onsen hotel.
登別海洋公園尼克斯 Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe
Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe is a Northern European-style marine park, and I was impressed by the romantic castle, which is a four-storey fish exhibition hall, at the entrance. There is a giant Crystal Tower, and the museum also features Japan’s largest jelly fish tank, swordfish tank, aquatic tunnel, touching pool and more.
In addition to the dolphin, sea lion and seal performances, also special is Hokkaido’s first Milky Way Pool. Entering the hall, I could see thousands of tiny sardines and sharks moving in the same direction. When I looked carefully, I discovered that the sharks were hunting for sardines, and the scene was spectacular and amazing! Sitting in the comfortable chairs, listening to the soft music while watching the fish “dancing” – it was such a relaxing environment!
Next was the penguin parade, and the park had already set a pedestrian passage for the “performers.” After the music started, two penguins left Penguin House and walked along the passage, then eight penguins followed. There are King Penguins, Rockhopper Penguins and Cape Penguins, etc. Some penguins were relatively lazy as they only stayed in the same place without moving; but some were very lively, and posed for us to take photographs. Although the staff prohibited touching the penguins, just having a chance to see penguins walk in front of me was definitely an interesting experience!
Penguins walk along the passage with swaying movement, very cute!
There are two or three penguin parades daily, but these are subject to change and cancellation depending on the condition of the penguins or the weather. So, please check the times posted at the entrance to ensure that you do not miss this wonderful performance.
