Bewitching BaliOur winning image this week comes from Suwandi Chandra who rose to our “Monotone Magic “challenge — taking this hauntingly beautiful black and white photograph of the famed Lot Bali Temple during a stormy evening in paradise!  Suwandra used a tripod and long exposure to ensure that the sea was transformed into a ghostly “fog”, thereby focusing the viewer’s attention on the temple.

Chong, a runner from Hong Kong, entered the Bali Marathon on 22 April, 2012. Here, Chong shares his memories of the place, the people and the big race itself …

An Unforgettable Experience
“The Bali Marathon is definitely not ‘just another marathon’. It is memorable, beautiful, touching and so much more! And definitely worth the effort to plan a few  extra days’ vacation to enjoy the race itself set amidst the lush tropical beauty of Bali!”

“Balinese’s heart, soul and imagination created this unique event. And because we’re in the tropics, the race starts at 5am to avoid the worst of the heat. However, most Balinese wake up really early — even earlier than me — and their hand-held torches light the roads and protect you from the darkness.”

“After sunrise, you arrive in the world of the movie Eat, Pray, Love.  Young Cu Scouts from Ubud villages cheer and clap their sticks for you. Some kids even run with you — to try and experience the marathon themselves with their little legs! This is what Bali is all about.”

“But the best is yet to come …”

Traditonal Values, Magical Moments
“We start with traditional Balinese theatre set on empty ground just outside a village. The Barong god who represents harmony and health fights with the Rangda god who signifies chaos and illness. Runners are welcome to join in and help the Barong god.”

“You can feel the piety of the Balinese during the marathon. Balinese men hold and move huge statues of gods. And dancing for the gods is performed by beautiful young Balinese girls. Surely there is nowhere else except Bali where one can find such a unique way to celebrate a marathon!”

“If you’re planning to join the next Bail Marathon,  don’t forget to bring some money. If you feel hot, tired and thirty, the best solution is to visit a local store — and join fellow runners from Singapore, Australia, Britain and Malaysia  — eat ice-cream, take some group photos, and of course exchange Facebook contacts!”

“Fatigue is the easiest route to friendship, and ice-cream can lead your taste buds to heaven. So, let’s eat, play and run — in the tropical paradise of Bali.”
